Blood Orange Popsicles

For me, somehow this became the year of the epic blood oranges.

First I found them for really cheap at TJ’s and made a salad dressing and upside down cardamom cake.

Then I started getting loads of them from a family friend’s tree and made sparkling juice and marmalade.

I thought the season was over and then suddenly received a huge bag – the very last oranges, from the top of the tree. My coworker, Hannah, recently suggested that I make a blood orange sorbet, in imitation of one of her favorite flavors from Ciao Bella Gelato. I did that (recipe will be up soon!), but first I wanted to share the popsicles I made. They unintentionally came out very patriotic looking, and totally appropriate for the Fourth of July festivities coming up.

I added a little sugar and they’re perfectly sweet, orangy and very refreshing. Who wants to come over for a pool party?

Recipe:

Blood Orange Popsicles

  • Blood oranges
  • Sugar to taste (around 1/4 cup for every cup of juice, depending on sweetness of your oranges)

Juice blood oranges and pass juice through fine mesh sieve to remove seeds and big lumps of pulp. Place sugar in a small saucepan and saturate with juice. Heat, stirring frequently, until sugar is dissolved. Add to remaining juice, stirring to incorporate. Let cool, then carefully pour into your popsicle molds and freeze.

    …And with the rocket shape and blue sticks/handles, they’d be a perfect, exotic treat for the 4th. Delicious.

    I love blood oranges – when we lived in Sicily, we drove thru a grove every day…the smell of the orange blossoms in the spring….divine!

    What a celebration of blood oranges you have had. I don’t know which recipe I prefer. Great popsicles, and also the cardamom upsidedown cake looks awesome.
